Yes, it's very random. A friend and I seemed to semi consistently get it working by both using the same DNS (cant see how this matters, but things got a lot better after doing this), then just sending a bunch of invites and sometimes loading the recent savefile

Nah you really don't. Part of what ruined Dead Space 3 was it trying to do horror and co-op in the same game. Shit's not as scary when playing with a friend. Though to be fair, I'm guessing a lot of people will just watch popular streamers play this game, so that'll ruin the immersion factor as well.
